Lisa Stilkey, 44 jumps from window to her death police charged husband Allen Stilkey

A Massachusetts woman threw a pillow out a second-floor window before jumping out to her death in an attempt to flee from her husband, the Worcester District Attorney said.

Allen Stilkey, 40, and his wife, Lisa Stilkey, 44, were involved in a violent argument inside their Douglas home late Thursday night that involved broken furniture and glass, the district attorney, Joseph Early Jr. said Monday after the arraignment in Uxbridge District Court.

The champion arm wrestler has been ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty to manslaughter and other charges in connection with the death of his wife.
Lisa Stilkey suffered severe injuries and was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead early Friday.

Police say a witness told them, “Allen Stilkey was threatening to kill her” and that Lisa Stilkey had claimed her husband “had been beating and choking her for several months.”

As Lisa Stilkey was rushed to University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where she was pronounced dead on arrival, her husband barricaded himself in their home and refused to let police in.

When police got a warrant and entered the home Saturday, they reported finding evidence that “a violent struggle had occurred in the home.” Allen Stilkey’s lawyer, Albert E. Medici Jr., didn’t respond to a request for comment yesterday.

Allen Stilkey had recently taken out a life insurance policy in his wife's name and can be heard in a phone call Lisa Stilkey made to a relative threatening to kill her, prosecutors said.
Allen Stilkey was arrested later Friday and held over the weekend on $500,000 bail.
In addition to manslaughter, he has been charged with assault and battery and threatening to commit a crime.

There is no evidence to support the manslaughter charge and his client is not responsible for his wife's death, Stilkey's lawyer said.
According to the American Armsport Association website, Stilkey took first place in his weight class at the group's 2010 national championships held in San Antonio, Texas. He has also won regional events.

Allen M. Stilkey, 40, of Douglas yesterday in Uxbridge District Court pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter, assault and battery and threatening to commit a crime in the death of Lisa Stilkey, 44. Prosecutors, who say Stilkey had just secured a 250,000 life insurance policy on his wife, wanted the 6-foot, 230-pound arm wrestler held on 500,000 bail, but Judge Paul Lopasio took a tougher tact, and ordered the 1995 International Arm Wrestling Federation Arm Wrestler of the Year held without bail. A state police report said Lisa Stilkey threw a pillow out of her home's second-floor window and jumped just after midnight Friday. Police say a witness told them, "Allen Stilkey was threatening to kill her" and that Lisa Stilkey had claimed her husband "had been beating and choking her for several months."

Allen Stilkey was arraigned Monday in Uxbridge District Court on charges of manslaughter, assault and battery and threatening to commit a crime. The 40-year-old Stilkey was arrested Friday after his wife, 44-year-old Lisa Stilkey, was found severely injured outside their Douglas home. Prosecutors said the woman jumped out a second-floor window to escape her husband after a violent argument. They said she tried to use a pillow to break her fall. "(Allen Stilkey) informed the police department that he and his wife have been arguing that evening, and that argument led to them to where they were at that point," Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said outside the courthouse. Prosecutors said Lisa Stilkey called her stepson just before the jump.

Police say that the couple was arguing when Lisa threw a pillow out of a window and jumped out of the same second-story window in an attempt to get away from Allen. She suffered serious injuries in the fall and was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. During the domestic dispute, Lisa spoke with her son on the phone. "Now this is approximately 15 minutes before the 911 call," said Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early. "She said that if I'm dead, he did it." The defendant's attorney said Stilkey is not responsible for what happened -- that he's a good husband and father with no prior record, who called 911 after his wife jumped from the window. He is now charged with manslaughter, assault and battery and threatening to commit a crime. "There's no evidence that my client had any involvement whatsoever with her going out that window," said defense attorney Al Medici. The government says a $250,000 life insurance policy had been taken out in the victim's name in the weeks before her death and that Stilkey had recently updated his passport. The defense disputes those claims along with the district attorney's charge of manslaughter.

"And furthermore that individual heard Mr. Stilkey say in the background, 'Get off the phone or I'm going to kill you.'" Prosecutors said Allen Stilkey, a former arm wrestling champion, took out a $250,000 life insurance policy on Lisa Stilkey -- his fourth wife -- just two weeks ago. "To our understanding there was a life insurance policy that was taken out within a week or two prior to his death and that also he had updated his passport photo," said Early.

Authorities say the couple were involved in a argument late Thursday night. Lisa Stilkey allegedly threw a pillow out the second floor window before jumping in an attempt to escape her husband. Allen Stilkey's lawyer says his client is not responsible for his wife's death. Gabe Accardi told this newspaper in 2010. Those traits served him well in his sport, but likely may have terrorized his 44-year-old wife, who was so fearful after the couple fought on Friday that she jumped from a second-floor window to escape his rage, according to investigators. Lisa Stilkey tossed a pillow out the window before she jumped in a desperate attempt to break her fall, but the effort would prove futile. She was alive when police rushed to her aid, but later died at the University Campus of UMass Memorial Medical Center. She always had a smile and a helping hand for everybody. Her MySpace page documents happier times in the brief marriage, with pictures of trips the couple took to California, along with photos of the pair in warm embrace.
