  • An alleged Chicago gang member whose lawyer says was working as a cook at the Dirksen federal building is facing drug and gun-possession charges.
Daniel Rivera, 25, also known as “Capone,” was arrested Saturday while police were patrolling an area in the 5200 block of South Kolin Avenue known for gang activity, according to a police report. Prosecutors said Rivera was seen engaging in a drug sale about 7 p.m.
He allegedly told police his father kept a gun inside his house nearby. Rivera, a convicted felon barred by law from possessing a gun, also said he had a small amount of cocaine, police said.
Rivera led them to the basement of his home, where police found a .380-caliber handgun in a couch and, above the refrigerator, a baggie with about seven grams of suspected cocaine, according to a police report.
His attorney, Michael Johnson, said Rivera’s employer knew about his felony background when Rivera was hired. The Dirksen building serves as Chicago’s federal courthouse.
A police report says Rivera is a known member of the Maniac Street Disciples, a gang Chicago police Supt. Garry McCarthy declared war on after the June shootings of two young girls and the September beating of a 14-year-old boy.
A judge set Rivera's bail Sunday at $20,000.
