President Obama weekly address: Investing in clean energy future to create more jobs

Speaking from a factory in Virginia, President Obama talks about how companies are creating more jobs in the United States, making better products than ever before, and how many are developing new technologies that are reducing our dependence on foreign oil and saving families money at the pump.

President Obama is calling for Congress to end $4 billion in subsidies to oil and gas companies, and invest in clean energy instead, arguing that decreasing the nation’s dependence on oil will ease the pain at the pump.
“We’ve been handing out these kinds of taxpayer giveaways for nearly a century. And outside Congress, does anyone really think that’s still a good idea?” the president asked in his weekly address.
“We should be investing in the technology that’s building the cars and trucks and jets that will prevent us from dealing with these high gas prices year after year after year,” he said.

As rising gas prices become a key issue on the campaign trail, the president continued to defend his “all-of-the-above” energy strategy against Republican attacks.
“As usual, politicians have been rolling out their three-point plans for $2 gas: drill, drill and drill some more. Well, my response is, we have been drilling,” the president said. “Under my Administration, oil production in America is at an eight-year high.”

Obama, speaking from a manufacturing facility in Petersburg, Va., that he visited Friday, vowed to “keep doing everything I can to help you save money on gas, both right now and in the future.”
“I hope politicians from both sides of the aisle join me. Let’s put aside the bumper-sticker slogans, remember why we’re here, and get things done for the American people,” he concluded.

National Clean Energy Summit 4.0 was held on Tuesday, 30 August 2011, at ARIA Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, NV
Veteran business executives, energy policy innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, and senior public officials from both parties, along with citizens, students, and the media, gathered in Las Vegas, Nevada for a day-long clean energy summit. NCES is an annual event hosted by the Center for American Progress, Clean Energy Project, MGM Resorts International, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. National Clean Energy Summit 4.0: The Future of Energy brought together the nation's top minds to chart the course for the future of energy in America.
How will consumers benefit from a clean energy future?
There has never been a more important time for Nevada and the nation to invest in this future. While trimming the federal budget deficit, we must also invest in the research, development, deployment, and commercialization of new products and technologies that will make Nevada and the United States a competitor in the $2 trillion global clean energy market.
The summit focused on our clean energy future. In the coming years, new homes and buildings will become increasingly energy efficient, contributing to more livable neighborhoods and sustainable communities. These buildings will use electricity more efficiently with a smarter electric grid. They will rely on electricity from the sun, wind, and geothermal sources generated throughout Nevada and the West. They will be connected to each other using better-designed roads and rails, traveled upon by a new wave of 21st century low-emission or carbon-free vehicles. National Clean Energy Summit 4.0: The Future of Energy laid out this path to a clean energy future.
Energy innovation isn't just an imperative for growing our economy-it's also vital to defending our nation. NCES 4.0 highlighted Department of Defense investments in renewable and efficiency technologies that will make our troops safer and spur the civilian clean tech sector to commercialize new technologies, just as they have with the Internet, engines, and microchips.
NCES 4.0 also sparked a conversation between Western state leaders on how to best take advantage of our vast regional resources to create newjobs, rebuild our economy, and ensure long-term prosperity.
Nevada is at the center of the movement to generate clean energy, leading the nation in per capita solar and geothermal generation. Since 2008, these dynamic Summits have become one of the country's most visible and influential gatherings of leaders and creative policymakers helping to bring about the transformation to a clean energy economy.

National Clean Energy Summit 3.0: Investing in AmericanJobs occurs at a critical time when we must accelerate investments in the clean energy economy. These investments will create American jobs, advance energy independence, and ensure long-term, sustainable prosperity for Nevada, the nation, and the world.
This year’s summit will advance the conversation about attracting much needed financing for new clean energy companies that are ready to put their technologies to work creating jobs today. By bringing together industry experts, clean energy visionaries, investors and public officials, NCES 3.0 will identify measures to support investments in the ideas and infrastructure essential to producing and selling clean energy technologies and services. This summit will emphasize steps to further transform Nevada into a thriving clean energy hub, which fosters long-term job creation and economic growth.

Nevada is at the center of the movement to generate clean energy. We have abundant solar, wind, and geothermal energy resources to power our nation’s economy. Nevada also is a leader in deploying energy efficiency technologies that reduce energy demand, create jobs, and save consumers money. Since 2008, these dynamic Summits have become one of the country’s most visible and influential gatherings of leaders and top policymakers helping to bring about the transformation to a clean energy economy.
Just as America should lead the world in the clean energy revolution, Nevada can lead the nation with its ample resources and ambitious innovators, creating a robust clean energy market. National Clean Energy Summit 3.0:Investing in American Jobs will build on this vision for the future, redefining what it means to be a strong America.
