Authorities say a Moore County deputy has been shot and killed as he tried to arrest an Iraqi war veteran with an outstanding arrest warrant for not paying child support. Sheriff Lane Carter said Thursday that 58-year-old Richard Rhyne had spoken to the suspect and determined he was wanted when the man pulled out a gun and shot him outside an abandoned home near Vass. Lane says Martin Poynter then shot and killed himself with the same gun. The sheriff says Rhyne was investigating a trespassing complaint when he encountered Poynter and his brother. He spoke to the men, checked their names and was about to take Poynter into custody when he was shot. Rhyne had been in law enforcement for 37 years and a Moore County deputy since 2007.
